What to do in Iceland?

Beyond the Trails: How to Spend Your Time in Iceland Between Runs
Iceland is a paradise for trail runners. Where else can you cross moss-covered lava fields, pass roaring waterfalls, and sprint along volcanic ridgelines all in a single run? But when you unlace your trail shoes and give your legs a well-deserved rest, the island has plenty more to offer.
If you are planning your adventure in the land of fire and ice, discovering the local culture and landscapes at a slower pace is a must.

Check out momondo’s Reykjavik Guide for travel inspiration. To get you started, here are a few of our favorite essential experiences to pair with your running itinerary:

  1. Soak in Geothermal Springs for Muscle Recovery
There is no better post-run treatment than a deep soak in natural hot water. While the iconic Blue Lagoon is great, you can also check out the oceanfront Sky Lagoon right outside downtown Reykjavík, or venture into the countryside to relax in the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir.

  2. Take a Light Shakeout Walk in Reykjavík’s Green Spaces
Keeping the legs moving on rest days helps flush out lactic acid. Head up to Öskjuhlíð hill to wander through the pine woods surrounding Perlan, or take a gentle stroll along the river paths in the Elliðaárdalur valley—one of the city’s favorite nature escapes.

  3. Fuel Up with Icelandic Coffee and Bakeries
Trail running burns serious calories, and Reykjavík’s food scene has you covered. Refuel with freshly baked cinnamon buns (snúðar) and artisan sourdough from Brauð & Co, or sit down for a warm, locally roasted brew at Reykjavík Roasters.

  4. Experience the Wild Highlands
If you want to take in stunning scenery at a walking pace, take a day tour into Þórsmörk or Landmannalaugar. Surrounded by glaciers and dramatic rhyolite mountains, these regions offer some of the most surreal landscapes on the planet.
Whether you're joining us at Arctic Running for an off-road tour or exploring the island on your own, enjoy every step of your Icelandic journey!
